About Us

The Challenge

The Tahoe Five Peaks Challenge was created to celebrate the extraordinary beauty, scale, and spirit of the Lake Tahoe Basin. What started as a personal endurance hiking project quickly evolved into a community-driven adventure — a Tahoe hiking challenge that invites hikers and trail runners to experience Lake Tahoe's most iconic summits in a single, unforgettable 24 hours.

Empower yourself to take on one of the toughest day hikes in America — safely, responsibly, and with a deep appreciation for the stunning landscapes that make it possible.

Because we said so! Hard is subjective, and there may be tougher challenges out there, but from a hiking perspective (not a trail runing one) this is pushing the limit of feasible to complete within 24 hours, we did the math. This is the hardest route we could find in terms of distance + elevation gain and loss.

Yes. To be officially recognized and added to the T5 Hall of Fame, you must complete all five peaks within a 24‑hour window. We have other options for completion for casual attempts that can be completed over several days.

Yes. The casual T5 can be completed self‑guided on any date, as long as you register your attempt beforehand. However, the official season for T5 Trail Run and the Classic 24 Hour Hike is July through October when trails are clear of snow. Please check the weather and mountain conditions before your attempt.

We use a third party system Jot Form for registration, click this link to register, its secure and easy to complete.

You’ll receive:

  • A confirmation email
  • GPX files for each peak (also available on this site)
  • Timing and logistics resources
  • A link to submit your completion time after your attempt

After your attempt, use the Submit Your Time form (linked in your confirmation email). You’ll provide your total elapsed time, date of completion, and GPS verification (T5 Trail Run and 24 Hour Classic only)

Yes. Teams are welcome for all hiking challenges. Each member must register individually, but you can complete the challenge together.

Trail Runners must track and record their own indivdual times

No. The T5 is a personal endurance challenge. There are no aid stations, pacers, or course markings. You are responsible for your own navigation, safety, and pacing.

Very difficult. The T5 requires excellent fitness, strong navigation skills, and the ability to manage fatigue, heat, altitude, and changing weather over a long day. Do not overestimate your abilities.

No permits are required for the standard T5 routes. However, trailhead parking may require fees or passes depending on the location.

We provide GPX files for each peak. You should carry:

  • A GPS watch or phone app
  • A backup navigation method
  • Knowledge of the recommended routes

Other resources we recommend: AllTrails, PeakBagger

Trialhead parking locations are also noted on this website on The Peaks page.

Downloading a GPX file is simple, even if you’ve never used one before.

  1. Tap the “Download GPX” button for the peak you’re doing.
  2. Your phone or computer will save the file automatically.
  3. Open your navigation app (Gaia GPS, AllTrails, Strava, etc.).
  4. Look for “Import File” or “Upload GPX” inside the app.
  5. Select the GPX file you just downloaded — the route will appear on your map.

That’s it. Once imported, you can follow the line on your map just like a digital trail guide

Yes. Driving between trailheads is part of the challenge. You must obey all traffic laws and drive responsibly. Please be mindful of the communities around Lake Tahoe.

Essentials include:

• Trail shoes

• Headlamp

• Water filtration and Water Bladder

• Layers for changing weather

• Navigation tools (Gaia or similar)

• Food for a 24‑hour effort

• First Aid  Kit  (especially for blisters)
